Paul Chan är född 1973 i Hongkong och växte upp i Omaha, Nebraska. Han bor och arbetar i New York.

2014 tilldelades Chan Hugo Boss Prize, vilket sammanföll med hans separatutställning Nonprojections for New Lovers på Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2015). Chan är en av sex konstnärer som tillsammans curerat grupputställningen Artistic License: Six Takes on the Guggenheim Collection (2020).
