Matti Kallioinen
Matti Kallioinen was born in Uppsala and raised in Sundsvall, Sweden. He graduated from Konstfack, the University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and lives and works in the city.
The most fundamental elements of the physical world form the material of Matti Kallioinen’s art. Time, space, lines, surfaces, light, sound, and colors emerge as a signaling system adrift, beyond the familiar patina of everyday life. Matti Kallioinen’s artistic practice is wide-ranging, spanning performance and video installations in the early 2000s and evolving through multisensory installations and a playful exploration of space, form, and perception. A belief in the expressive potential of the line ties together these diverse forms of expression. A rhythmically winding line, at times tying itself in knots, runs through Kallioinen’s practice.
Selected solo exhibitions include Gallery Steinsland Berliner, Stockholm (2024, 2020), Gotland’s Art Museum, Visby (2023), and Gallery 1646, The Hague (2014). Group exhibitions include Malmö Art Museum, Malmö (2020), Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm (2012), Magasin III, Stockholm (2007), Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2006), and the National Gallery of Albania, Tirana (2002).
