Watch the creation of Sirous Namazi’s work In-betweens (2023). Detailed photographs of the porcelain prototypes have been translated into textile paintings, pixel by pixel and stitch by stitch. The pixels of the embroideries both dissolve and unite the motif.
In the video, Magdalena Hesnel uses a machine to execute the embroideries. For Namazi, the choice of method was obvious, as the advanced mechanics offer both possibilities and limitations. The result is more uniform than if the work had been done by hand, and yet the machine takes shortcuts that create irregularities in the transition between stitches and shades of color.
