Walter De Maria

September 11 - December 11, 1988
Curator: David Neuman

The exhibition features three works by the American artist Walter De Maria: a 14-metre long sculpture; Cage II from 1965, which is De Maria’s tribute to John Cage, and a polygonal sculpture. These works are typical of the artist in his choice of material – burnished steel – and in their minimalist imagery. Walter De Maria was one of the most important figures in the emergence of late modernism in New York in the early 1960s. In works such as The Broken Kilometer, The Earth Room (both permanent installations in New York) and The Lightning Field (in New Mexico), the conceptual takes precedence over the physical object in the viewer’s experience of the art. The exhibition at Magasin 3 is the artist’s first in Scandinavia.
