Jonathan Meese was born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan. He lives and works in Berlin and Hamburg, Germany.

His work extends across paintings, drawings, prints sculptures, performances but also surrounds to writing, stage design and directing within the theater and opera field. Major retrospective exhibitions were Dr. Zuhause: K.U.N.S.T. (Erzliebe), Kunsthalle St. Annen, Lübeck (2019); Die Irrfahrten des Meese/Messe’s Odyssey, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2018); Jonathan Meese. Malermeese – Meesermaler, Museum der Moderne, Salzburg (2013); Jonathan Meese: Sculpture, Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (2010); Mama Johnny, Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (2006) and Revolution, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2003).

His work is part of several private and public collections as Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Albertina, Vienna; Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Louisiana-Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk; Musées de Strasbourg, Strasbourg and K20, Düsseldorf.
